The Big Organizer Secret
Pssst. You want to know a secret? An organizer’s secret? This isn’t just any ole organizing secret: this it, the big kahuna. You sure you can be trusted with this?
Ok. Here it is: Organizing is never done.
What do you mean, “That’s it?” This is a big deal. Let me explain. A lot of people decide they need a little help with organizing. So they call us and we come help them figure out what system works, help them organize, and then leave.
What then? It’s not over. It’s not a destination, as though once you “get organized” you are there and your problems are magically solved. Of course, we're happy to come back and help you maintain yoiur new system, but in between visits, it's up to you.
Take my files for example. I don’t use a lot of paper, but what I have is in file folders. Just this week, my boss gave me something else I needed to file. I left it on top of my desk, and there it still sits. (See? Even organizers aren’t perfect.)
But that’s the trick – organizing as you go. The maintenance is the tough part, but in the end, I know if I put that shirt on a hanger right after I take it off, I won’t have to pick it (and three others) up off the floor later.
So next time you're looking at your piles of stuff thinking, "I just need to organized," stop. Instead, when you walk in the door each day, think about where you put items: the mail, your briefcase, your work clothes -- it could all end up in a heap somewhere. Or you could place each item in its home the second you put it down.
No big secret, is it?
