The Shelf Genie and Elfa aren't the only useful organizing gadgets out there. Sometimes the best organizing products are those not even meant for it. Check out our suggestions for what items and products to try, which to buy and which to toss.

Cool Organizing Tools: Hair Dryer Holder

Posted by Jennifer Wig onOctober27,2011

As we always tell people, organizing your space and time isn't about the latest Container Store box or electronic gadget. Still, in some cases, the right tool is the most important part of the job.

Such is the case with my hair dryer. My tiny bathroom had no convenient place to store this bulky object. The top of the toilet tank isn't big enough (can you believe how big hair dryers are now?) and the tiny cupboard space under my sink is used for other items.

Adventures in Space Bags

Posted by Jennifer Wig onJune16,2011

I get really excited about organizing products. Still, I buy very few, because you don't really need fancy containers or products to be organized. You just need a system.

But, as I mentioned last week, I bought some Space Bags®

for the first time. In this case, they were the ideal solution to contain some winter blankets. Now, would they really work?

Yes and no. I grabbed a bag, folded a blanket and ...

We have all participated in conference calls, but how many of you have actually set one up??

Well, I did this week for the first time. Was I ever surprised at the ease and convenience.

Stuck in an Unorganized Universe?

Posted by Janice Russell onJuly27,2009

Ever think: "I am overwhelmed by all of my stuff but I can't get organized because of X, Y, Z?" We all have reasons...excuses as to why we don't accomplish a task that we want to see completed. Whether it is organizing or something else, we often can't get beyond the thinking stage and into the action stage. I recently ran across these words from Gary Ryan Blair: Life will not go according to plan if you do not have a plan. Some of you are groaning right now. Words like plan and goals send you running in the other direction. I understand. I react the same way at times.

Blue Screen of Death

Posted by Janice Russell onJune04,2009

If you've experienced, you are groaning. If not, you wonder if I have lost my mind...

It started early one morning in June, 2005. I was innocently responding to an email when all of the sudden my computer screen turned completely royal blue. I tried everything (short of throwing it out the window!). At the first reasonable moment, I called my computer guy. He lead me through a couple of exercises that didn't resolve the problem. He said something about "a problem" and "blue screen of death" but I was too frantic to really comprehend.

Free Credit Scores

Posted by Janice Russell onApril13,2009

You no longer have to pay $5.95 or $6.95 each time you want to check your personal credit score.  Log on to creditkarma.com  or quizzle.com  and get your score free. (This site was recommended by Bottom Line Magazine). They even remind you each month to check and see how you are doing.  Free seems like a good deal to me.

Just a Little Bit

Posted by Janice Russell onApril10,2009

Overwhelmed by the web? Emails, social media, online information and purchasing sites all contribute to electronic overwhelm (e-overwhelm). I am sure that it is fair to say that unless we each put a boundary on how much time we spend on the web, we will only become more overwhelmed as opportunities on the web will only increase, not decrease.

Free Medical ID Wallet Card

Posted by Janice Russell onApril08,2009

While none of us likes to think about something happening to us which might leave us unable to speak, it is good to always be prepared. A colleague just gave me a website that allows you to generate a FREE medical identification card that fits in your wallet alongside your drivers license. The name of the site is MedIDs.com. It tells you what information to carry with you, it allows you to type in the information on a form, and then you can print out the information.

Doodle to Organize Meetings!

Posted by Janice Russell onMarch18,2009

Need to organize a meeting with several participants in different time zones? Time to Doodle! This is a free website where you can schedule an event or make a choice. I have only scheduled one event. It was soooo easy! I put in all of the times that I could meet. I decided to give people three choices: ok, could meet but only if necessary, or no. Doodle sent me a link to send to the participants and an administrative link for me. Even though I had never created an event, it took me less than 15 minutes.

Organizing Your Vegetables

Posted by Janice Russell onMay02,2008

With fruits and vegetables rising in price, it has become important to eat them rather than throw them away. You may have seen the commercials for Debbie Meyer GreenBags and wondered if they work. I have it on good authority, both from a client and a colleague, that they do. If you are unfamiliar with green bags, they greatly extend the life of fresh fruits and vegetables, enabling you to eat healthier without creating waste while saving money! For more information, go to the GreenBags website.
