How a New Outfit Made Me Late to Work

Funny how a new outfit can throw off your whole morning and make you late to work. But that's exactly what happened to me today.

I had purchased a new white, button-down shirt to wear with dress pants and although I had a general idea of how to put the outfit together, I wasn't sure. I pulled the shirt out of my closet and realized it needed to be ironed. So I took the time to do that before making breakfast, adding about 10 minutes to my routine.

Later, as I dressed myself, I realized I needed to wear a shirt under the white shirt. Quick change. Then, what about shoes? Should I go with the less attractive but more practical footwear? Or the not-so-comfy but much nicer high heels? After trying on both, I finally chose for a third pair, somewhere in between. But I lost another 5-8 minutes in the process.

Finally, jewelry. I put on a necklace. Eh. Tried another. Nope. Finally, a third. This was the quickest part, but even those minutes add up.

Which is why I walked out my door about 15 or 20 minutes later than usual. I work for myself and had no appointments first thing, so arriving at my desk at 9 instead of 8:30 was not a crisis. But it's a good lesson for those of you who have a boss watching your timecard: if you plan to wear a new outfit, try it on the night before to make sure it all works.
